Connecting Power / Visualizing Change

I worked on the animation for this video which was created to instruct citizens in the Middle East to contact other people in the region who are also being oppressed to share strategies and experiences.
Three versions were created with voice-overs in English, Arab and Persian as to make sure it reaches as much people as possible. Below is the English version.

My work for nanotube.nl

For the nanotube.nl project I provided some animated informational videos. I created most of the nano-facts, which are small bits of information about nanotechnology to inform the public about the facts. Furthermore I made two short story fiction animations which pose questions about how nanotech might influence society in the future. You can watch them all on nanotube.nl. The nanofacts 1 through 17 are made by me and the fiction stories #4 and #5 are also mine. All sound and music was made by Sjoerd Leijten. Here you can see Fiction story #5:

A new short story: 2345 (and a collage)

I wrote a short story for online magazine Tijdschrift Ei recently. I wrote it in Dutch, the title is 2345, and it’s about the summer of 2345 where there appears to be an end to scientific discovery. A young scientific promise, Warren Goudsmit, also pinball addict, is in a gang on the campus of the three universities of Antarctica who are paid searchers for those little morsels of scientific research that haven’t been explored yet. The story can be found here.

I also sent in one of my collages a while ago, for their Concrete issue, as seen here.

I call it Concreteland or Betonland in Dutch:

boiling poppySyrup video

I created this video for the track boiling poppySyrup for musical friend Sjoerd Leijten (who operates under the guise Schmink). It features very heavy contrasted footage of smoke and boiling water drops, amongst others, all of which I shot with my Canon 550D DSLR. For some effects I shot footage at 60fps (the maximum setting on this camera) which I then interpreted at 12.5fps, slowing time down at a factor of 4.8x. I shot the footage of the boiling water pit, the smoking opening in the ground and the moss in Iceland. The effect of water droplets bouncing around on a hot stove without vaporising immediately is called the Leidenfrost effect. This means on direct contact of the water droplet with the hot material it creates a thin layer of water vapor that protects the droplet from vaporising further for a short amount of time.

The video premiered yesterday (june 4th) on the Tour de Force of the Volle Band collective which I’m a part of.

Zuidas plates

Found some nice spacy material on the nearby Zuidas. If you look at the right hand corner, it’s hard to see the depth of the whole. I also like the reflection of a company logo lit at night in purple colors in the upper left corner. It was across the street, so I had to look for just the right angle to get this purple spot in the shot.
